Welcome Welcome to QC Management Options on the Atellica® Solution – a comprehensive overview. A part of our day in the life of the lab series. Blank Hello, my name is Samuel, but you can call me Sam. I am an applications specialist and I have responsibility for training customers on comprehensive overview topics for the Atellica Solution. My customers understand the typical QC options on their system. They are using the QC scheduler and they run their QC every day at 8 am after their system has completed maintenance. I want to take you beyond that by discussing three lesser used options for managing QC. Two apply to esoteric tests that you don’t run every day, as well as a third option that helps to make your Quality assurance plan even more robust. It is important to note that in these scenarios we are presenting one way to utilize these features, but you always have other options, since there are six automatic QC options in total. Option One How do I manage QC for low volume tests that are not run every day? Blank The first option I would like to discuss is how do I manage QC for low volume tests that are not run every day? My customer had an order for lactic acid that came in for a patient that was in the Emergency Room. On a normal basis, that order is requested about once or twice weekly in their lab. Because of the importance of this lactic acid test and factoring in patient risk, my customer would normally have had to run QC every day to make sure they met their turnaround times. How can they manage this with less planning ahead while making the most of their expensive QC material? QC must have a value before a patient test will be done. Blank The QC management option I recommend is QC Required. With QC Required enabled, a specific timeframe can be set. In this case it is set for 24 hours. My customer’s lab has not run QC for lactic acid within 24 hours, and then they receive a patient order for lactic acid. The system flags that patient order as QC Required. The system will also at that time automatically order QC for lactic acid. Once QC results are available for lactic acid, the system will automatically start running the patient test. Blank Let’s look at the QC Master List screen. After QC Required is enabled for the system, the default is that all tests will be enabled for QC required as you see here. You can disable QC Required for specific tests and levels as needed. Let’s look at the levels for an example. The Master List screen lets you individualize your QC settings for each test. Blank Here we see that by selecting a test, you can enable and disable the QC setting for individual levels. So, the benefit is you don’t have to run QC all the time for low volume esoteric tests. You use less QC material and less troubleshooting time is spent on days when you don’t have a patient sample for that test. Option Two How can I manage QC for tests that I run as a batch? Blank Now let’s talk about another QC option that you might not know about. This would apply to labs that manage their esoteric tests by batching them, in the case where the tests aren’t needed as STATs. An example of this might be the syphilis test. A lab may elect to store these patient samples in their refrigerator and schedule a shift to do syphilis testing on a specific day each week. So, how can I manage QC for tests that I run as a batch on the Atellica Solution? Blank Labs often use the first option found in the QC scheduler, which is to have QC scheduled by Day and Time. With this option, the system automatically creates QC orders at a set day and time each week. These tests are performed by the system automatically if the controls are onboard. But for the example we are talking about now, which is QC used for esoteric batch testing, I’d like us to consider a different scheduling option - scheduling by Control. This feature should only be used with manually loaded controls. For SH configurations, DO NOT use for controls stored in Cal-QC Storage. Blank The Scheduling QC by Control setting configures the system to automatically create QC orders when the corresponding control material is loaded on the system. For example, if the lab sets this up for their syphilis QC, then on the day when they batch their syphilis tests, they can just load the QC, and the system will automatically run it. So, the benefit is you can just load the QC with the correct levels by scanning in the barcode. Option Three How do I use the QC by Count feature on my Atellica Solution? Blank Our third option that we will be discussing is using the QC by Count feature. This feature is also found on the QC Scheduler screen, where we were just looking at the QC by Control option. Recently, I discussed QC by Count, with my colleague Sandy, who trains others in her lab on the Atellica Solution, as well as individualized quality control program goals in her lab. I am going to ask her to explain a situation, that they recently encountered in their lab and the workflow that they followed. Important: The tests will be performed automatically if the controls are onboard. Blank Hello Sam, recently in our lab, we utilized this lesser-known option called QC by count, which is about individualizing your QC and deciding how often our lab needs to run QC depending on patient risk. The Scheduling QC by Count setting helps us with that by configuring the system to automatically create QC orders after a set number of tests are run. We recently used this in my lab for Glucose and we scheduled that the QC orders be created after 100 tests were run. In summation: · QC Scheduled by Day and Time · QC Scheduled by Test Count · QC Scheduled by Control · QC Required · QC Ordered with Pack Change · QC Ordered with Calibration Do not forget: The QC Statistics package helps you with reporting and monitoring. Blank Thank you, Sandy, for sharing that. In summary, there are 6 different automatic QC options you can use. There are 3 automatic QC options in the QC Scheduler, plus QC Required, QC based on Pack change and running QC with Calibration. All these different automatic QC features that we discussed, and the Atellica Solution, help you to create a QC management plan, that fits your needs, and manages your QC materials, in a way that will make sense for your own lab.
