Veterinary shoulder examination - USA

In this video, you will learn how to position a veterinary patient for shoulder examinations.

In this video, you will learn how to position a veterinary patient for a shoulder examination. For shoulder positioning, dorsal recumbency supine or lateral recumbency positions are possible. The advantage of positioning in dorsal recumbency supine is that it is possible to perform the examination on both shoulders at the same time. For shoulder examinations, position the patient on the table head first supine with the shoulder over the Contour M Flex or Ultra Flex coil. Pull both limbs cranially and secure them to remain in the desired position. If needed, tape the elbows to keep them medially pulled and avoid abduction. Wrap the coil slightly around the shoulders and position the body or the Contour L coil horizontally, covering the whole area. Then secure the coil into place by using appropriate straps. For small dogs, it may be enough to only use the coil underneath the patient, wrapped towards the front and secured with a loop strap. Use sandbags, spacers and wedges to stabilize the sides of the position of the patient. Plug the coils, ensure that the coil link has no loops and does not hang loose. Then set the coil center to go to ISA center and move the table into the bore for single shoulder examinations. For big animals, the patient can also be placed in lateral recumbency. Use sandbags and straps to secure the patient's position on the side. Use spacers and wedges to position the shoulder to be examined more stably. Place the desired coil over the shoulder and connect the plug. Wrap the coil around the back and secure it in place with the straps. Once the patient is correctly positioned and the coil is connected, ensure that the coil link has no loops and does not hang loose. Then set the coil center to go to ISA center and move the table into the bore.

Users should be aware that the size and weight of the animal can impact many aspects (for e.g ., SAR) for MR imaging. The use of MRI contrast agents has been implicated in the etiology of chronic renal disease in some human patients, and guidelines for their use have been issued by several resources. To date, this issue has not been well documented in veterinary medicine. The use of such contrast medial is still considered safe in animals, although they should be used with caution in patients with preexisting renal disease.
