This online training will introduce you to the main features and functionalities of hardware in Siemens scanners, and will cover the following four learning objectives: Understand the IRS and its Dataflow Understand the IRS and the CT Dataflow Introduction to the Main Components of a CT Scanner Online Training Identify Metal Artifacts in CT Images Understand the IRS What is the IRS? Functions of the IRS Process IRS Understand the IRS [audf_int_main_comp_ct_scan_irs_toc_02.mp3] This chapter will introduce you to the Image Reconstruction System (IRS). Its basic functions will be described, and you will be offered an insight into its workflow. Image Reconstruction System (IRS) The Image Reconstruction System (IRS) is one of the main computers in the CT scanner. The IRS communicates with the acquisition system. It reconstructs images from raw data acquired by means of the detectors. Subsequently, it transfers the data to the Image Control System (ICS). Users do not operate the IRS directly. 616 P1020122 Image Reconstruction System (IRS) [audf_int_main_comp_ct_scan_irs_irs_03.mp3] The first topic we are going to address is the Image Reconstruction System (IRS). • The IRS is one of the main computers in the CT scanner. • This system communicates with the acquisition system. • It reconstructs images from raw data acquired by means of the detectors. • Subsequently, it transfers the data to the Image Control System (ICS). Therefore, users do not operate the IRS directly. Understand the CT Dataflow Kernel Slice Thickness Field of View Preprocessing H, B, etc. 0.6 mm – 10 mm Data acquisition Convolution Backprojection Image 50 mm – 500 mm Standard matrix size: 512 x 512 pixels Hounsfield scale: More than 4000 gray values to distinguish the different tissue types and materials (e.g., water: ca. 0 HU) ICS IRS Image Reconstruction Image Control Data Measurement/Acquistion Dataflow [audf_int_main_comp_ct_scan_irs_dataflow_04.mp3] In this flowchart you can see the CT dataflow. After detecting patient attenuated X-ray, this digital information is pre-processed for convolution. Image reconstruction in CT is a mathematical process that generates tomographic images from X-ray projection data acquired at many different angles around the patient. Image reconstruction has a fundamental impact on image quality. The convolution kernel is one of the most important parameters affecting the image quality. After filtering with the convolution kernel, filtered backprojection is processed. The filtered backprojection utilizes simultaneous equations of ray sums taken at differing angles of a sine wave to compute the values of attenuation coefficients within a cross section. The image reconstruction is done in the IRS. Patient data including the images will then be stored in the ICS. Define the Acquisition Workplace and Remote recon 4D Define the Acquisition Workplace and Remote recon 4D Introduction to the Main Components of a CT Scanner Online Training Define the Acquisition Workplace and Remote recon 4D Define the AWP and Remote recon 4D Image Control System (ICS) Remote recon 4D Acquisition Workplace (AWP) Siemens-Figure-3 602 CTWorkplace AWP Remote recon 4D Define the AWP and Remote recon 4D [audf_int_main_comp_ct_scan_aw_rr4d_toc_05.mp3] This chapter will address the functionality of the Acquisition Workplace and the Remote recon 4D console, as well as the difference between them. Acquisition Workplace (AWP) Image Control System (ICS) The console is the main workstation. Its users can: Perform examinations View tomographic images Load scanning parameters Run system software Control scanning Control the IRS 602 Acquisition Workplace (AWP) [audf_int_main_comp_ct_scan_aw_rr4d_awp_06.mp3] The Acquisition Workplace represents the Image Control System. Its users can: • Perform examinations • View tomographic images • Load scanning parameters • Run system software • Control scanning • Control the IRS Remote recon 4D The Remote recon 4D* is an additional console for image reconstruction from raw data and can be used for postprocessing. The Remote recon 4D* is directly connected to the Acquisition Workplace and shares the same database. CTWorkplace *Option for Somaris 7 scanners; please contact your sales representative for more detail. Remote recon 4D [3.4 Remote recon 4D.mp3] The Remote recon 4D is an additional console for image reconstruction from raw data and can be used for post-processing. The Remote recon 4D is directly connected to the Acquisition Workplace and shares the same database. Hint: This workplace is an additional reconstruction station. It is not possible to acquire the raw data.
